Welcome to the Literacy Council of Hot Spring County Arkansas
SOME OF THE PEOPLE THAT KEEP US GOING AND GROWING

Cathy Malone
I was a nurse for 15 years and ran 2 radio stations for 9 years. I am a member of the VFW Auxiliary and a tutor at the Literacy Council of Hot Spring County. I like gardening, hunting, and doing crafts. I also have a passion for animals.

Jan Robertson
After seven years teaching in public school, I found my calling in adult education and literacy. I have been teaching adults for 33 years at Arkansas State University Three Rivers. I have been a volunteer board member with our literacy council intermittently for over 30 years.

Bethany Lovell
I started volunteering in June 2023 as well, to help others achieve the goal of furthering their education. I've been volunteering at the literacy council for over a year and then in 2024 became the Coordinator of the organization. I believe that every adult has the choice to better themselves through education no matter their situation or circumstances..

Jeff McDaniel
I am a 35 + year veteran of broadcast news, as well as commercial production. I truly believe that a reading community is an educated community. We all have potential and reading is your gateway to a better life and understanding of your community. I am proud to support the Literacy Council of Hot Spring County in an IT and board member capacity.

About Us
The Literacy Council of Hot Spring County, Inc. dba READ Program, is a non-profit, 501(c)3 volunteer organization. It is made up of a Board of Directors (our governing body); volunteers that do administrative work, fundraising and tutoring; and most importantly, our students/learners.
Everything we do at READ revolves around how we can best serve the needs of our students. We look for any type of accessible funding. Funds are expended to pay for overhead such as rent and utilities, salary for one part-time director, match stipend for an AmeriCorps member and consumable and non-consumable books and materials for our library collection. READ has received corporate and private foundation grants, federal grants, state grants, fundraising monies, individual donations and support from our local communities.
Our focus is working with adults. We enroll students who come to us of their own will or were brought to us by a relative or neighbor. Some learners are referred by programs such as Department of Community Corrections (DOCC), Hot Spring County Drug Court, adult education, employers, etc. For years, we have trained inmates to tutor other inmates at the Ouachita River Correctional Unit (ORCU) in Malvern.
